Dear Mags, we came down off Sallow Ridge on the ninth night, and I have not slept properly since except upright in the saddle. Tobiah says the sky is a ledger nobody has balanced yet, so we steer by the seven stars Father used to point out over the byre. Two of them are bigger than the rest, fat and blue as a dyer's thumb, and the little ones spill off them like sparks from the forge.

The lead steer carries a brand the Ferris boys cut at the last muster, a heart with a word inside it. Nobody can read the word in lamplight, so we call the beast Sweetheart and let the argument go. I have settled it my own way. The word is Cowboys, which is what we are: the lot of us who ride the long grass for wages and never see the coast.

At the Harrow crossing the river rose a hand's width in an hour and took two wagons and Dunstan's mule. We lost the track on the far bank in the rain. Tobiah swore we would not, then went quiet and said nothing for a long while, until the cloud tore open and there they were, the big pair over the eastern shoulder, pointing us back to the ford as if they had been waiting all along.

We are two days from the market at Cask Hollow now. The steers are fat and the boys are singing again, badly. Tonight I counted the stars twice before I could put the pen down, and I will count them again for you when I am home, if you will still have me tallying things in the kitchen. Keep the light in the window. Yours in the dust, Wat.
