Heart-shaped fingerprint tattoo on skin
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo forms a heart shape from two fingerprint-style whorl patterns meeting at a centre point. The linework is fine and even, with dense ridges that give the design a textured, shaded look against the skin. The image is a close, cropped photo of the tattoo on a light-toned area of skin, with fabric at the top edge and hair at the lower right.

The third drawer down had been sticking since the spring, and Margery Pell had learned to lift it with two fingers and a small prayer. Inside lay the Halloway Quay index of prints, eleven thousand manila cards, each one a whorl or loop or arch inked by someone brought in drunk, frightened, or simply unlucky enough to lean on a broken window. Nobody else in the building opened that drawer without a sigh.

Constable Tobin brought her two cards on a wet Thursday in March. They had come up in the harbour basin a fortnight apart, two men nobody had claimed, drowned in the February gales with no connection the Yard could find. The mortuary man had lifted their right index fingers and sent them up in a brown envelope with the tide still on it. Margery laid the cards edge to edge on her blotter and nudged them, the way you might nudge two sleeping cats together to see if they would object.
The ridges swung round to meet each other. Two whorls, one leaning left, one leaning right, touched at a single centre point and made a heart. Tobin said it was a fluke. Margery said every pattern was a fluke, that was the whole trade, and spent the evening with a lamp and a magnifying glass counting ridges. The counts agreed at the join, to the last line, which was not a thing ridges were supposed to do.
She wrote NO MATCH on both cards in her neat hand. Then, instead of filing them in separate drawers, she slid them into one envelope, licked the flap, and left the name box empty. Her own thumb was grey with ink by the time she switched off the lamp.
