Fingerprint heart on the side of a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A heart shape is built from fingerprint ridge patterns in black ink, with the whorls and loops forming the outline and fill. The fine, even linework is crisp against light skin, and the ink is solid black with no colour. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame, with a light fabric edge at the top and dark hair at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow came early to Hollin Pass that year, and Tomas did not come down with it. The carriers at Cold Ford said he had set out for the salt on the eleventh of November, and nobody had seen him since. The priest would not enter a name in the burial book without a mark to swear by, and the innkeeper, who kept the traveller's ledger, said the only proof of any man was the print of his finger on a page. So Agathe took a tin of lamp black and a sheet of good paper and went up after him.

It is a long climb and she was slow at it. At the hut above the second stream she found his pack under a shelf of ice, and inside it the ledger each traveller signed on the way over. She opened it by lamplight. Every page had its row of thumbs in ink, one for each crossing, and she pressed her own blackened finger against each one until she found the small tight loop that split into a fork at its heart, the same loop he had left beside her name every time he came home.

She turned back to the first page, the one from the spring of their wedding, and saw what she had missed for years. His thumb had gone down in the margin, and over it, half smudged, were two of her fingers, because she had held the book steady while he signed. Where the two prints overlapped, the ridges curved out on either side into two rounded lobes that met in a point. She traced the shape with the nib, then wrote beneath it the date the pass had closed.

The carrier took the page down to Cold Ford, and the priest read it aloud at the burial, then wrote Tomas's name in the book beside the heart, as plainly as if he had signed it himself.
