Fingerprint heart on the side of the torso
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A heart shape is built from dense, concentric fingerprint ridges in black ink. The linework is very fine and even, and the ridges curve to define the heart's lobes and point. The ink sits on warm skin against a plain background, with fabric at the top edge and hair at the right.

The harbour clerk at Skerrow kept his ink pot beside the tide tables, and every child born on the quay had to press a thumb into it before the parish would give them a name. Nobody thought much about the book until the autumn the herring boat *Gull Mary* came in without her crew and the sea sent back a single oilskin glove, the thumb of it still stiff with salt.

Maud Tallis came to the clerk's window with the glove wrapped in a cloth. Her husband Joseph had been aboard. Edwin Pargeter opened the register to the Tallis page and rolled the glove's thumb against the paper, then his own, then a dozen others, squinting at whorls and loops under a brass glass. None of them matched the glove. He told her plainly that the sea was careless with its gifts and that the book could not tell her where her man had gone.
She did not leave. She took the pen from his hand and pressed her own thumb into the ink, then Joseph's old ledger-mark from the back of the book, and laid the two prints edge to edge on a clean sheet. Where the ridges met, they bent toward each other and rose into two soft lobes with a point at the bottom, the way a heart sits on a plate of salt cod. Edwin lifted the glass and said nothing for a long time.
The parish had no column for that. He wrote it in anyway, under the Tallis name, and weighted the page with a stone from the slipway. In the mornings after that, when the boats went out past the breakwater, the first light came through the window onto that sheet, and the ink never smudged.
