Heart-shaped house with rose and banner
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A red pencil drawing of a house with a heart-shaped outline, scalloped roof tiles, a chimney with a wisp of smoke and two paned windows and a door. A traditional-style rose and leaves sit at the upper left, and the words HEART & HOME are set on a curved banner beneath the house. The linework is clean and even, with shading built up in short red strokes, and the composition is centred on a pale background with a red pencil at the lower left.

The first batch was out of the oven before the church clock struck five, and Ada Pell was already at the back door with flour to her elbows, listening for footsteps on the frozen lane. Nobody came up the hill before light unless something had gone wrong at home.

It was Sam Coker, his coat buttoned wrong, asking for a loaf on credit. His grate had gone out in the night and his youngest was coughing in the box bed. Ada had heard the same story from half the valley that winter and had never once refused it, though her father said a bakery that gave bread away would have nothing to sell by Lady Day. She wrapped two loaves in a cloth and pressed a warm lump of dough into Sam's hand for the child to chew.
The rule of the lane was older than either of them. A chimney that smoked before dawn meant a hearth was being kept, and a hearth being kept was a door that could be knocked on. Ada's chimney had smoked every morning for thirty years, so the lane knocked on her. Her grandmother used to say the house on the hill had been built in the shape of a heart so that anyone who came to it would find the warmth at the centre.
By the time the sun cleared the ridge, Sam's smoke was rising beside hers, thin and grey and stubborn. Ada went back to her tins without looking round. She had seen a second chimney start up down the valley twice already that week, and she rolled out the next batch and let the oven door bang shut.
