The snow had been falling since the bus turned back at the bottom of Harrow Fell, and by nine the landlady had stopped apologising for the draught. You take the stool by the upright piano in the back parlour because it is the only seat not already wet from someone's coat. The lid is chipped at one corner, and someone has pencilled a phone number inside it, a number that belongs to a shop that closed in 1998.

Mrs Abernethy brings you a sherry she says is for the cold and not for the thing you are thinking of. Nobody has played since Christmas. The guests are a retired signalman, two cyclists who drove up in a borrowed van, and a girl named Priya who keeps checking the window for headlights. You lift the lid. The first key sticks, then gives. The G is flat by a hair, and that is where the tune starts, because the hymnbook on the stand has a curl at the foot of every stave, a tail that refuses to let go of the line.

You play the hymn wrong on purpose, slower, leaning into the sour note. The signalman starts humming. Priya stops watching the glass. By the third verse the cyclists are singing, the damp logs have caught, and the room has the look of a small ship that has stopped rolling.

When the road is cleared at dawn, the van is gone and so is the sherry glass, but the pencilled number is still inside the lid. You do not ring it. You leave the stool turned towards the window, the way a pianist leaves a chair for someone who has not come down yet.
