Heart with headphones and heartbeat line
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single heart outline wears a pair of headphones, with a heartbeat trace drawn down its centre and a small droplet shape at the tip. The linework is dark and even, with grey shading on the headphone band and ear cups. The tattoo sits against plain pale skin, with a dark garment visible at the left edge of the frame.

Ada Pell had worked the switchboard at Kirkby Lune for nineteen years before anybody thought to ask why she kept her headphones on when no call was coming through. The exchange hummed like a kettle that never quite boiled. She said the line had a pulse if you listened long enough, a tick beneath the hiss, and the lads from the telegraph office laughed at her until she made them put the cups to their own ears.

On Tuesdays the infirmary sent its trace down the wire. Dr Hale's machine drew a sleeping patient's heart as a jagged line on a paper roll, and the nurse read the peaks aloud so the exchange could log them. Ada followed the spikes by sound, a rush and a drop, a rush and a drop, and pencilled the figures into the margin of the ledger while the kettle-hum went on around her.
One Tuesday in November the rush did not come. Nurse Calder's voice went thin, then flat, and the line sat silent for eleven seconds that Ada counted under her breath. Then the rush returned, steadier than before, and she wrote recovered, 4.12, and underlined it twice. Nobody thanked the exchange, which was how she preferred it.
When she retired they gave her a new pair of headphones with a cracked band. She wore them to the bus stop with nothing playing at all, because the wire still ran under the pavement, and she liked knowing it was keeping time.
