The skipper had a rule about animals on the Maud Ellery, and the rule was that there were none. Nobody had told the cat. He came aboard at Grimsby with the ice, a grey tom with one torn ear, and by the second tide he had claimed the warm lid of the paraffin stove as his own. We called him the Admiral because he never once got up for anyone.

Across the quay, a brown and white collie cross called Tansy sat at the foot of the gangway every morning at five, watching the boats go out and come in. She belonged to nobody in particular, which is how the fish dock likes its dogs. When we were in, she slept against the bollard. When we were out, she sat.

In February the wind got up off the Dogger Bank and we came home a day late with the hold half empty and the Admiral gone. I searched the fish room with a torch, my breath smoking, and found him at last in a coil of old rope. Tansy was lying beside him. She had come down the gangway in the dark, which she was never allowed to do, and the two of them had settled nose to tail in the cold, the cat's back pressed to her warm belly, bent round each other like a shape you might draw on a chart.

The skipper found them at dawn and said nothing, which from him was a blessing. Next trip the dog came too, and nobody made a rule about it. Some things a boat simply makes room for. The Admiral still takes the stove lid, but now he shares it with a dog who snores like a winch.
