Parrot outline tattoo on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A single-line outline of a parrot in grey ink sits on the inner wrist, with a solid black beak and a small red stroke below the bird. The curves of the outline form a heart-like shape around the open space of the body. The skin is shown in a close, straight-on view against a plain light background, with a woven WEEKEND wristband above the tattoo.

The parrot turned up in the Bramley rows the week the wasps got into the cider press, hanging off a branch like a dropped glove. Nobody in Cowley Mill claimed it. Dad said it had escaped from one of the holiday lets over at Hather, and Mum said it had the look of a bird that had been talked to too much. I was fourteen and paid a penny a crate to pick, so I was the one who had to climb the ladder beside it every morning.

It did not care for the ladder. It liked the tin bucket with the bent handle, and it would perch on the rim and tell me to mind my step in Dad's voice, which was the worst thing about it. It also said "ta-ra" in a woman's voice I never heard, and once, when the rain came over the top of the hill, it whistled the first four notes of a hymn and then stopped, as if it had forgotten the rest. Its beak was black as a boot, and there was a red smudge on the feathers under its chin that Mum said was crab apple juice and I said was not.
On the last Saturday of August the lorry came for the crates, and the parrot went off the bucket and into the hedge. I thought that was the end of it. The next morning there was half a pear split neatly down the middle on the rim, the seeds picked out and laid in a row, and the parrot back on the ladder with its head tipped sideways, watching me come up the path.
I kept the ladder that year and the next. When it said my name in Dad's voice, I answered it.
