Dog head in an outlined heart on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a dog's head in profile, with the ear and muzzle drawn inside the outline of a heart. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The design sits alone on pale skin, centred in the frame against a carpeted floor.

The dog is already waiting at the foot of the tower when you come down the iron stairs, nose to the wet step, tail going like a metronome. Bramble was never a handsome animal. One ear stood up and the other gave up halfway, and she carried her head turned to the left as though she were always listening for a boat that wasn't coming. Your father called her the lighthouse's dog, which was a joke, because the lamp had run by itself for years and nobody on the island needed a keeper any more except the gulls.

The ferry horn sounds twice from the harbour. You have a bag packed by the door and a letter from the council in your coat, offering a flat in Penzance with no room for animals. You kneel on the cold gravel and rub the soft place behind her good ear, and she leans into your knee the way she always does, as if the two of you were one shape that happened to have four legs and two hands. You tell her it's only for a while. You have said that to the cat, the gull with the bent wing and the rowing boat, and none of it has ever been true.
You leave her collar hooked over the brass rail at the top of the gallery, where the old lens still turns on its bearing. When the beam swings out across the water it lights the rail, and the rusted curl of the collar makes a small loop around nothing at all. You watch from the deck until the island is only a grey smudge with a light in it, and every time the beam comes round it finds her on the shore, head turned towards the boat, waiting for you to come back up the hill.
