A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pruett had counted the spoons twice before the Thursday coach arrived, and still the rose-patterned sugar bowl was missing from the dresser. Her lodger, Walter Heald, came down to breakfast with his bag already packed, which told her more than any excuse he might have offered.

He offered none. He set a length of faded blue ribbon on the tablecloth, knotted round a bundle of letters, and said the bowl had gone to the pawnshop on the front to pay for the second rose. Mrs Pruett asked which rose he meant. He touched the top envelope, addressed in a hand she recognised from the summer of the regatta, when a girl from Harrow Terrace had stayed three nights and left with her hair pinned up in red silk.

Since then Walter had posted her a pressed rose every Friday, each one mailed from a different town up the coast, wrapped in card and tied with that same ribbon. Now he had nothing left to press. Outside, the grey sea was busy with gulls, and the bay window rattled the way it always did when the wind swung north.

Mrs Pruett sat down heavily and took the ribbon from the cloth. She tied it again into a neat bow, slid the bundle back across to him, and nodded at the door. "Then the eight-fifteen will do," she said. "And you'll bring the bowl back with you, Walter, or you needn't come back at all."
