You will not believe the state of the parlour curtains here. Mrs Pellow has hung them the colour of boiled ham and swears they were bought for the Jubilee, though I doubt she was alive for the last one. I am writing this on the window seat in my good blue dress, because the light is better here than anywhere in the house and because I have made a decision I want to tell someone before I lose my nerve.

Mr Abernethy came down on the Tuesday train with a trunk and a cough. He asked for the room over the harbour and then asked me, quite politely, whether I would sit for him. He paints in watercolour, very quick and very wet, and he says the sea looks different when there is a person in the foreground. I said I would sit for an hour. I have sat for four days.

The thing he keeps coming back to is the bow. I wore Mother's pink ribbon in my hair the first afternoon, only to keep the wind off my face, and he stopped mid-stroke and said, "Leave that exactly where it is." So I am to be remembered by a ribbon and a hand raised to my chin, as though I am listening for something very far off.

Perhaps I am. The boat from Saltcombe goes out at six and I have bought a ticket on it, the first thing I have bought for myself in years. Do not write to Mrs Pellow about it. I have left the ribbon for him to keep.
