Heartbeat line and heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black heartbeat trace runs across the inner wrist and finishes in an outlined heart on the right. The linework is even and fine with no shading, and the ink sits on pale skin against a plain, softly lit background. The small, centred composition keeps the design as the clear focus of the photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Hetton Lane had owned an electrocardiograph before the Ashworth boy went down the number two shaft with a fever nobody had bothered to name. The machine arrived on the Tuesday in a wooden case borrowed from the cottage hospital at Easington, and Nurse Margaret Rooke set it up on a trestle in the first aid room while the pit wives stood in the yard pretending not to watch.

Her hands were steady. They had always been steady. What shook was the paper, which fed out of the machine in a long grey tongue, and the thin black line that drew itself across it, jagging up and settling, up and settling, like a man climbing stairs in the dark.

The lamp hissed. Mrs Ashworth held a cracked mug of tea and did not drink it. The lead wires were cold on the boy's chest, and Margaret kept her eyes on the paper rather than his face, because the paper could not lie to her. Twelve minutes of nothing that looked like hope, then a fat, clean peak, then another, evenly spaced, and a steady ticking that seemed to climb up through the floorboards from the pit itself.

When the strip was finished she tore it along the perforation and folded it twice. Mrs Ashworth asked what it said. Margaret told her the truth: that it said he was still here, and the rest was for the doctor to read. She pressed the fold into the woman's palm, and the woman held it the way you would hold a letter from someone who had come back up from the dark.
