Heartbeat line with cross, heart and semicolon on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black tattoo on the inner wrist shows a heartbeat trace that rises into a cross on the left and finishes in an outlined heart on the right. A semicolon sits beneath the cross. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the image is in natural light against a wooden background.

Dear Nell,

You asked why I still keep the strips from the old machine, the ones that curl up in the drawer under the nurses' station. Tonight I finally have an answer. It came off the bed in bay four at about half two, when Mr Okonedo's monitor started drawing its little mountain range again and the line went flat for one long second.
Nobody panicked. Ruth had the paddles on the trolley before I'd finished saying his name, and the ward got loud in the way it does, all squeaking shoes and clipped instructions. I stood with the printout in my hands, watching the paper feed out, and what I noticed was how the trace just kept going. Peaks, troughs, a little notch where he'd moved his arm. It never stops to think about it. It simply carries on to the next beat.
He came back. The rhythm settled, the shape on the screen stopped looking like a question, and by four he was asleep with his daughter dozing in the chair beside him. I tore off the section where it happened and folded it into my pocket. I don't know why. Maybe I wanted a record of the moment it didn't stop.
Ruth asked me afterwards if I was all right. I said yes, and then I said what I've been thinking since we were girls: a semicolon is only a pause that refuses to be the end. I'm on nights until Thursday. Come and see the strips, and we'll have a cup of tea somewhere the machines can't hear us.
Love, Margaret
