Outline heart with semicolon on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline sits on the inner wrist, with a semicolon placed in its lower right area. The linework is thin and single-weight in black ink, with no shading. The background is a dark, glittery fabric in purple and green tones, and the skin is photographed straight on with the tattoo centred.

The sweet peas had come up crooked again, leaning towards the glass as though they had heard something in the next street. Nell knelt on the potting-shed step and tried to straighten the first row with a lolly stick, while her grandfather, who had never once in forty years of gardening been hurried, watched from the doorway with his tea going cold.

"You've stopped mid-row," he said. "Nothing's finished by stopping. Half the things in this garden are only paused."
She didn't want a lecture. She wanted the sweet peas to behave, the council letter about the allotment rent to stop crackling in her coat pocket, and her mother to ring back. Instead she sat on her heels and looked at the privet hedge at the bottom of the plot, the one Ambrose had clipped every August since before her mother was born. A gap had grown in its middle, the shape of a heart somebody had forgotten to close, and in the lowest curve of it a blackbird had built a nest, then stopped, as if it too was waiting to see what came next.
Ambrose came down the path with the teapot and a trowel. He said nothing. He knelt beside her, pressed a seedling into the soil with two careful thumbs, and left the rest of the row for another day. Nell watched the clay settle around the stem and felt the knot in her chest loosen a little, the way a sentence does when you realise you can simply carry it on later.
By September the sweet peas had climbed their canes and the blackbird had fledged. Ambrose clipped the hedge around the gap and left the gap alone. Nell left the council letter unopened on the shed shelf, beside the seed tin, where she could see it every morning and decide when she was ready to finish it.
