The composition is centred on the upper back, with the design sitting in the middle of the frame and dark hair visible at the top right.

The lamp on Scarra Head flashes three times and then rests, and your father says the sea keeps time the same way, so you learn to count it before you learn your letters. Every night at dusk you climb the iron stairs with the oil can and the chamois, and every night he sits at the table with his hand flat on the wood, counting along under his breath. He says a good keeper knows the light by feel. You think he means the lamp.

The winter the gale takes the boat off the slip, the mainland doctor comes out on the supply launch with a grey bag and a long face. He listens to your father's chest, then to the wall clock, and then he draws a jagged line on the back of an envelope: a spike, a dip, a spike, a dip, and at the end a small loop that he tells you is the heart closing its door. You carry the envelope up to the gallery and hold it against the glass while the beam swings out over the water.

Night after night you tap the pencil marks against the brass rail and match them to the flashes, long dark, short bright, and you keep the rhythm steady even when your own hands shake. The fog comes in thick on the seventh night. A ferry's horn sounds somewhere out past the rocks, and you flash the lamp back at it, on and off, until the answering blast fades and the engine noise turns toward the harbour.

In the morning your father is still breathing, slower now, his palm on the table and his lips moving. You sit beside him and tap the rhythm on the wood. He turns his hand over and presses two fingers to your wrist, and he counts with you until the shape on the envelope is one you could draw from memory, a steady light coming back in along the shore.
