Heartbeat line with a heart on the side
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A continuous heartbeat trace runs horizontally across the skin, with a tall spike on each side of a small outlined heart in the centre. The linework is thin and even in solid black ink, with no shading or fill inside the heart. The photograph is black and white, with the tattoo centred and the skin filling the rest of the frame.

The big top had sagged by the second week of November, and the canvas men argued in the mud about whether it would see the winter. Mother Oriel heard none of it. She sat on the step of the blue wagon with a cup of cold tea and watched her grandson Piet walk the high rope above the sawdust, one foot and then the other, while the net below lay folded because there was no money to hire a new one.

Tobiah kept the time for him on the great drum. Forty years he had beaten it, and every act in the show took its pace from that sound the way a horse takes its pace from a rider's breath. When Piet wobbled, Tobiah struck twice, quick and close, and the boy set his feet again. Once a travelling doctor had shown Tobiah a strip of paper with a jagged line printed across it, the beat of a man's heart drawn by a machine. Tobiah scratched that same shape onto the drumhead with a hot nail, two tall spikes around a small heart, and the children thought it was only decoration.
In January the drumskin split in the frost. Oriel had no coin for a new calfskin, so she sold the brass horn, then the striped awning, then the silver candlesticks from the caravan. Tobiah watched her carry them out. That evening he went alone to the field with a bucket of rainwater and sat beside the broken drum until the light had gone, tapping its rim with two fingers, quick and close, waiting for an answer that did not come.
On the last night they played to four farmers, a clerk and a dog. Tobiah had no drum, so he rapped the bare frame with his knuckles, two quick and one long, and Piet walked the rope to the far end without once looking down. Nobody clapped. The dog barked, the farmers laughed, and the show kept its time the only way it had left.
