Heartbeat line on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a heartbeat style line sits on the inner wrist, with a short spike, a horizontal run and a cluster of vertical strokes. The linework is thin and uniform with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The photo is taken from above with the wrist centred, and the background shows grey carpet and dark clothing.

Nobody in Carrow Halt would say how the line came to be drawn on the signal box wall, only that it was there before the rails were relaid. Old Mabel Tregear kept the lamp, and every evening she took a stub of chalk and made a mark for each train that passed. A short spike for the milk train, a long run when the coal went down the valley, and a bunch of upright strokes for the ones that carried soldiers home.

The year the bridge at Ystrad fell into the river, the timetable went to pieces. Trains came through at all hours with no warning, and Mabel kept chalking long after the bell had stopped. Her nephew Owen, who was sixteen and thought himself too old for stories, asked her why she bothered when nobody read the wall.
She said a line that stops is a line that has given up. A line that keeps moving, even in jumps, is still a heart. So she kept on, and when the bridge was mended she marked it with a single spike and a long, flat stretch, the way a pulse looks when a body is finally resting.
Owen grew up and went off to the cities. Years later, a letter came to the halt in his careful hand. It said only that he had walked the whole length of the line from the coast, counting the stations, and that every one had a lamp lit. Mabel had taught him that. Underneath, in smaller letters, he had drawn the valley's line, and he had left a space at the end for the next mark.
