Teal wave tattoo on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small wave outline in teal ink sits on the inner wrist and lower forearm, with a single curling crest and a flat trough. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the single colour stands out against pale skin. The photo is taken indoors in a car with a warm, hazy filter, and the wrist is raised so the tattoo sits in the centre of the frame.

The lift in Pembroke House had been broken since Tuesday, so Maren carried the shopping up fourteen flights with the bag handles cutting into her fingers. On the landing she stopped to rest and found the lino sticky with something spilt, and beside the fire door someone had drawn a wave in teal marker, one curl and a long flat tail, the way a child draws the sea when they have only seen it on a postcard.

She knew the hand. Dev Okafor from 14C had been drawing on everything since his mum's shifts changed and he started coming home to an empty flat at four. Last week it was the bin store wall. Today it was here, neat and small, and she found herself wanting it finished rather than wanting to scold him.

Her own window faced the car park and, beyond it, a grey sliver where the estate ended and the reservoir began. Nobody on the estate had ever called it the sea. She took a tin of teal gloss from the cupboard under the stairs, the one left behind by decorators who never came back, and climbed down again to his door.

He answered in socks with a biro behind one ear. She held out the tin. 'Your wave's far too small,' she said. 'Come and do the rest of the stairwell with me, and we'll see if it can carry a boat.' Dev took the lid off with his thumbnail, and they worked up the wall together, him drawing the crest first, the way the tide always starts, then the long flat line of water that ran on past the edge of the landing and out of sight.
