Heartbeat line with music notes and heart

Black and grey · Flash

The design shows a continuous black line in the shape of an ECG heartbeat trace. Along the line, the peaks give way to a beamed pair of musical notes and a small solid heart at the right-hand end. The linework is clean and even on an off-white background, with no shading and no colour.

Sit closer, you lot, the fire's only warm near the grate. No, Tamsin, the lamp stays off, the old tale wants the dark. Now. Before the Drift, when the ship was still only a rumour in the heads of engineers, there was a woman called Oyelaran who kept the infirmary monitors on Halden Rise. She wasn't a doctor. She was a listener.

Every bed had a ribbon of light that climbed and fell, and every night the nurses read her the numbers. But Oyelaran didn't care for numbers. She heard the rhythm, the little lurch and drop of it, and she swore that if you drew the line on paper and bent it just so, it would sit on the stave like a melody. Her cousin laughed and said that was the sort of nonsense you got from too many hours below decks.

One night a boy called Pell came in with a fever that wouldn't break. His mother sang to him, badly, a tune about a lighthouse. Oyelaran watched the trace dip and climb, and she took a stylus and scratched the peaks into the wall plaster. Where the line reached its tallest point she set down two quavers joined by a beam, the notes that matched the lighthouse song. At the far end, where the trace flattened to its steadiest, she drew a heart, small and black.

Pell lived. The wall stayed up. Forty years later it was the only thing left of Halden Rise, and the children were taught to read that line before they learned to read words. So when you're tired of my voice, remember the trace was only ever a song still being sung. Now, bed. The lamp can go on.
