Heartbeat line with heart in black ink
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A continuous black line forms an electrocardiogram style heartbeat trace, with a sharp spike on each side and a small secondary bump. In the centre the line loops into an outlined heart shape. The linework is even and thin, drawn in solid black on a pale, textured grey-white background, with the design centred and filling the frame horizontally.

Mags Teague had cooked for the herring boat Hesper for nineteen winters, and in all that time she never let a man in her galley hear her counting. She counted under her breath while she kneaded the bread and while she stirred the oatmeal, and she counted the strokes of the bilge pump through the bulkhead because the sound came in a rhythm she liked.

One February the Hesper took a bad sea off the Pentland Firth, and the mate, a lad called Dougie Rae, went over the rail in the dark. They found him the next morning tangled in the nets, cold as the deck. The skipper said there was no sense carrying him below. Mags disagreed. She laid him on her galley table between the flour and the knives and sat with two fingers at his neck for the length of a long pot of tea.
Nothing came. Then, just as the light turned grey in the porthole, something moved under her fingers, faint and stubborn, a flutter, a stop, a flutter again. She took a burnt stick and drew each beat on the back of a flour sack, and by morning the line ran across the cloth like the sea's own handwriting: a tall spike, a low hump, then a long quiet stretch. Where the beat had leaned back and gathered itself, she drew a small closed heart, and she held her breath while she did it.
Dougie lived. He never went back to sea, but he kept the flour sack folded in his coat until it fell apart at the creases. Mags told anyone who asked that the lad's heart had drawn itself on that sack, and that if you wanted to know how it had gone, you only had to read the line and find the place where she had leaned in and refused to let go.
