Hebrew lettering with swirl flourish on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A Hebrew phrase in black script runs across the inner forearm, with the letters set in a bold, clean lettering style. A thin black swirl flourish extends from both ends of the text, forming a looping frame around the words. The tattoo is in black ink only, photographed against pale skin in even, natural light.

At ten past three the corridor lights on Ward Nine dropped to their night setting, and Dilys Marsh counted the drip bags the way other people counted sheep. In bed six lay Mr Abelson, who had been a bookbinder before his chest gave out, and beside him his daughter sat in the vinyl chair with a paperback she had not opened since midnight. Every time the pump chimed she looked up as if it had said her name.

Dilys brought her tea in a cup with a chipped handle and stood a moment by the bed. The daughter tilted the paperback so Dilys could see the inside cover, where someone had pencilled a line of letters she could not read. It was the phrase her father said at the close of every Sabbath, the daughter explained, and it meant something like grace that goes beyond what is owed. He had written it in the margins of every ledger he ever bound, she said, so that the figures would have something kind to sit beside.
At four the monitor's green line began to loop more slowly, and Dilys did not reach for the phone on the wall. She pulled the second chair over and let the daughter hold the old man's hand while she watched the numbers settle. Nobody spoke. Dilys found herself tracing a curl in the air with one finger, the way her mother used to trace the top of a letter before she wrote it.
By six the window had gone the colour of weak milk. The daughter had copied the phrase onto the back of a glove wrapper with a biro, and above the words she had drawn a small, careful flourish that curled back on itself. Dilys thought it was the most deliberate thing anyone had made all night.
