Black ink tattoo of a bird silhouette beside Hebrew lettering on the inner wrist, in a lettering style with a simple silhouette motif.

Bird and Hebrew lettering on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink bird silhouette sits to the left of a single line of bold Hebrew script, both on the inner wrist or forearm. The bird is solid fill with simple edges, while the lettering uses clean, even strokes with slightly uneven edges. The image is a close, straight-on photograph against a plain skin tone, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Halevi had been asking for the window since midnight, and by two the ward sister had stopped telling him it was painted shut. I found him in the end bay with his drip stand angled toward the glass and his good hand flat on the sill. Beyond the car park, the security lamps buzzed over nothing at all.

A bird had got into the stairwell somehow, a dove the colour of wet slate, and for an hour it had been throwing itself against the fire doors. Nobody wanted to catch it. Mr Halevi said it had come looking for him, which Sister Ogunleye called the morphine talking. He had a word for what the bird meant and made me repeat it back twice, slowly, the way you would teach a child the kerb. Geulah. Redemption, he said, or being let out of a place you were stuck in.

At ten past three I wedged the stairwell door open with a sharps bin. The dove dropped out of the rafters like a dropped glove, circled the sluice room once, and slipped through the gap into the cold. Mr Halevi watched the empty doorway for a long while. Then he asked whether the night had been long for me as well, and I said it had, and he said good, that meant we had both been waiting for the same thing.

When the day staff came on at seven, his window was still shut and his bed was neatly made. On the whiteboard above the sink, in my handwriting, the word was still there, and I had left off the last letter.
