Hello Kitty with cupcake and rainbow on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Hello Kitty character wearing a red bow sits at the centre, with a pink cupcake balanced on top and a rainbow arcing behind. Surrounding it are cherries, a striped lollipop, a blue diamond, pearl strands, stars and hearts, all in bold black outlines with bright, soft-shaded colour. The tattoo fills most of the frame against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The relief boat was three days late and the fog had sat on Scarth Rock like a wet dog, so I climbed the iron stairs with my brother's sweet tin under one arm and a foul temper under the other. Ted bought the tin in Berwick for his granddaughter, forgot to post it, and left it on my shelf as if I ran the post office. Inside were pearl-strung sweets, a bag of paper stars, and a tin lid stuck with a white cat in a red bow, who I had decided, after thirty years on the rock, was smug.

I had the lid off when the wind swung round to the north-east and tore a hole in the grey. Through it, low over the water, a rainbow stood up like a drawbridge. Behind it the sun caught the lens and threw long coloured spokes across the cloud, and right at the arc's foot something red and round glittered, which was either a cherry or my eyesight giving up.

A rowing boat knocked against the slipway below. Samir Hale, who fishes creels for his uncle, had come out on a bet, lost his nerve halfway, and climbed the ladder with a face the colour of putty. I gave him a striped lollipop from the tin, then a cupcake sponge I'd been saving since Easter. He asked whether the light was magic. I told him it was a lamp, a lens and a grumpy old woman, and he said that sounded like magic to him.

The relief boat finally ground in at dusk. Samir had gone home with a fistful of pearls and a stripy stick, and I found the cat lid propped against the lamp housing, bow to the sea, where the wind couldn't reach it.
