Hello Kitty in kimono with cherry blossom on upper arm

Japanese · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Hello Kitty character in a red kimono with a gold obi and a pale fan sits at the lower end of the design, with a red bow on her ear. Above her, pink cherry blossoms with yellow centres and green leaves scatter across the skin alongside a vertical column of black Japanese characters. Bold outlines and flat colour fills dominate, set against a plain pale skin background on a dark backdrop.

The cat turned up the week the cherry came out, sitting on the wall between my leeks and Mrs Okafor's compost heap as though someone had posted her. White all over, round face, no mouth to speak of, and a red bow on one ear the size of a robin. Dad would have called her a bother. I called her Miss Sakura because I had no better name, and she did not object.

She wore a red robe with a gold sash, which I took for a dressing gown until I saw her carry a folding fan everywhere, snapping it open against the afternoon sun. Each day she sat beneath the tree and fanned the fallen petals off the grass, and each day I swept them back into the border, and each day she undid my work. By June we had an arrangement, though neither of us ever said so out loud.

In the last week of April the tree let go of all its blossom at once, a warm wind coming up off the Medway and stripping the branches bare. I found her under it, fan closed on her lap, the red robe gone pink with petals. She did not look up. I stood at the back door with the broom and understood, the way you understand a bulb is pushing through, that the garden had been waiting for her to notice it.

So I leant the broom against the shed and went in to make two cups of tea. When I came back she had moved along the wall and was sitting on the step beside my chair, fan open, shading the spot where I always sit.
