Sister Okafor says I am not to make entries on the charts, so this goes in my own notebook, the one with the ribbon that keeps coming undone. Nobody on Ward Four is supposed to be a cat, but nobody has ever asked me to produce a form for it either.

Tomasz is seven and has decided the jab is a betrayal. The syringe in my paw is full of lime cordial, which I tell him is medicine and which Sister Okafor says is not technically medicine, so I have decided it is a cordial with ambitions. He has pulled his blanket up to his nose and is glaring at me over the top of it with the seriousness of a magistrate.

So I sat on the edge of the bed, retied my blue bow, and held the syringe up to the lamp until it glowed like a traffic light. I told him the green only looked so bright because it had been kept in the dark cupboard with the custard creams, and that it had been waiting all night for someone brave enough to trust it. He asked if I was a real nurse. I said the real nurses were the ones who stayed after the bell, and that I had never once left before the last cup of tea was cold. He held out his arm before I could finish the sentence.

He was asleep by four, the cap of the syringe tucked under his pillow like a tooth. I have put the empty tube in my pocket, where it will wait for the next one who needs a bit of nonsense before a sting.
