Nobody expected Pim to come back, least of all Pim. Mrs Dunstan had buried her under the hawthorn behind the science block in 1998, bow and all, and the Year Six class had made a cross from lolly sticks and written R.I.P. on it in felt tip. So when the reunion invitations arrived at Ellie Parr's flat, she read the seating plan twice before she believed it: Pim, Table Four, plus one.

The Sports Hall at St Brendan's smelled of floor polish and warm lemonade. Ellie had her coat half off when the door at the far end swung open and the cat came in on her hind legs, one ear hanging loose, moss-green patches blooming across her fur like damp on a wall. Her pink frilled dress was still immaculate. A thin line of strawberry squash ran from her chin to the bow, and small black flies circled her head like an escort she had never asked for.

She sat down at Table Four without a word, sniffed the sausage rolls, and asked Ellie in a voice like a cracked violin whether Mr Hadley's spider still lived in the corner by the climbing rope. Ellie said it did. Pim nodded, pleased, and said she had come to collect it, because it had been waiting thirty years for someone to finish the web.

By the time the DJ played the song from the class assembly, the spider had come down from the rafters and the flies had gone quiet. Ellie looked across to see the cat's chair empty, and on the varnished floor beneath it a neat trail of green paw prints leading straight out through the fire door. On the wall above, the old Year Six register was still open, and beside Pim's name someone had written, in the same careful hand, present.
