Hello Kitty tattoo on a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot stands on a black bathroom scale, with pink handwritten lettering across the scale's face reading 'You are more important than this number' and a curved arrow. A small Hello Kitty character with a bow is tattooed on the top of the left foot, drawn in a simple dark outline with light grey shading. The composition is a top-down view with both feet visible on the tiled floor.

Mind the step, that third tile lifts, always has. Sit down on the flour sack, Ruth's boy, and let the ovens warm your knees while I tell you about Mrs Okonedo's scale, the big black one that lived beside the proving drawer and never once told the truth about anything.

Every morning at four she stood on it in her slippers, read the needle, and sighed like a kettle. Forty-eight kilos of rye, she'd say, and the dough would come out fifty, and the flour would be two grams light, and the sigh would carry on all day. Then one Tuesday her granddaughter came in with a felt-tip pen, a little white cat with a red bow stuck on its cap, and wrote across the glass in letters a finger high: you are more important than this number. She drew an arrow curling round to point at Mrs Okonedo herself.

The old woman laughed so hard she had to sit on the bin. But she left the words there. Bread still got weighed, mind, a loaf is a loaf, but after that the needle only told her what the flour was doing, not what she was.

The last I knew, that scale was still in the back room, the writing gone faint as breath on a window. Every dawn somebody steps up on it to check their sacks, and the whole bakery smells of something rising.
