The wolves took two goats the week the thaw failed, and Hesketh Dunn went to the edge of the pines with a billhook and no clear notion of what he meant to do with it. Mother Ashe, who kept bees at the last cottage before the trees, watched him from her step with a jar of honey in her lap. "You'll want to look for the one with the torn ear," she said. "She's been hurt before and she knows the way back from it."

He found the tracks by noon and the wolf by dusk, caught in his own snare-pit on the north slope where he had dug it for foxes. Her foreleg was bent wrong under her and her ribs showed through the grey coat. She bared her teeth at him and did not have the strength to snap them. Hesketh stood a long while with the billhook heavy in his fist. Then he knelt, lifted the timber, and pulled the trap wide enough for her to crawl out, and he went home without looking back to see whether she had managed it.
The goats lived through that winter and the next. In spring a dead hare lay on his doorstep, clean and unmarked, and it came again every spring after, always when the first frost was off the ground. Hesketh never told the village where it came from. He only saw, once, a grey shape with one ear torn standing on the ridge, watching the house until the light went.
When his own wife fell sick in the autumn of the fifth year, Mother Ashe came up the path with the honey jar and sat by the bed without a word, and the hare was on the step at first light, waiting for him to open the door.
