Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a person's lower back in close view, with dark hair at the top of the frame and a dark waistband at the bottom. Two lines of black handwritten script read "I'm not perfect" and "Neither are you", with the second line smaller, lower and angled across the skin. The image is black and grey, softly lit against a dark background.

He wanted a message for a woman called Ruth who worked the ticket barrier on platform four. Not a letter, he said, just the words. He had tried them three times on the back of a bus timetable and crossed each attempt out. Margaret uncapped the pen and waited. 'I'm not perfect,' he said, and then stopped, and she wrote it in her careful schoolroom capitals. 'Neither are you,' he said, more quietly, and she wrote that too, smaller, letting the line slope downhill toward the corner of the card as if it wanted to leave the page.
Ruth came through at half past six, after the last barrier check, and read the card under the strip light. Margaret watched her face do nothing at all for a long time. Then Ruth folded the card in half, put it in her coat pocket beside a set of keys she had been meaning to hand in since August, and said the kettle in the staff room was still hot if anyone wanted one.
