Sit closer, the stove's warm and the lorry drivers have all gone to bed. I'll tell you about Anneliese, who came to the bridge at Hallow Ford in the wet February the river rose over the road. She had one suitcase, a coat two sizes too big, and a paper bag of boiled sweets she kept offering to the guards as though they might let her through for them.

The guard on the pole was a thin young man the depot called Dobbin, which was not his name but suited him. He turned her papers over slowly, then stopped at a note folded into four, its paper gone soft as cloth. Her mother had written it in pencil on the back of a seed packet, the letters joined and leaning forward as if they were in a hurry to get somewhere. It said only what she had been told since she could walk: listen to your soul, and the rest of the road will mostly look after itself.

Dobbin read it twice. Then he asked what her soul was saying just now, and Anneliese, who had not expected a question, admitted it was saying she was cold and the bridge was far too long. He laughed, a short surprised sound, and lifted the pole. Go on then, he said, and handed back the packet.

She tucked it inside her coat, against the ribs, and walked under the barrier into a town where nobody knew her name. For the first time in weeks she did not count her steps.
