Be true to who you are handwritten script
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
Black ink handwritten script on a plain white background reads Be true to who you are, with a full stop after the last word. The linework is even and fluid, with thin strokes and little shading, and the capital B and the descenders of the y and the h are looped. The composition is a simple centred block of text with no added imagery.

The ladder is still leaning against the Discovery tree when you come down the lane in late August, the wasps already drunk on windfalls, and your grandfather's handwriting is waiting for you on a seed packet tacked to the shed door. You read it twice before the kettle boils. He has written it the way he labelled every crate for fifty years: looped and unhurried, as if the words had all the time in the world.

Nobody in the village expected you to stay. The cider people from Hereford had offered Dad a fortune for the far field, and you had spent the summer on the phone to a London firm that wanted you in September, all tailored jackets and a desk by a window. You packed the car on Sunday. On Monday the pickers came early, and you stood between the rows with a bucket, counting Egremonts and Cox's, trying to tell your hands what to do.
The old man came down at noon in his cardigan, sat on the tailgate and did not ask. He only handed you a knife and an apple, the one with the russet cheek that always split first. "Taste it," he said. It was sharp and sweet and nothing like the shop fruit you had been eating for a decade. "That's the one tree I never grafted over. It came up wrong. Nobody wanted it. Every year it bears something nobody else grows."
You drove to London the next morning with the note folded in your wallet and the apple core rolling on the passenger seat. At the first red light you unfolded it again. Be true to who you are, in his looping hand, the full stop pressed so hard the pen had torn the paper. Then the lights changed, and you let the car carry you on without deciding anything yet.
