Helmet and flowers on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A helmet with a rounded green dome, pink trim, grey panels and a teal lower section sits at the centre of the design. Pink flowers with yellow centres, a pink bow-shaped bloom and green leaves and buds wrap around it on a light skin tone. Bold black outlines and solid fills give it a flat, classic colour finish, with a dark plain background behind the leg.

The hall smelled of floor polish and warm wine, and Mr Okafor's old classroom had been turned into a bar with a paper banner. I found Colin Vesey by the window, still drawing. He had been the boy who filled the back pages of every exercise book with a bounty hunter in a green dome of a helmet, pink trim across the visor, flowers curling round his shoulders because Miss Lamb had told him to stop drawing war and draw something pretty.

'You kept the flowers,' I said, nodding at the sketch he'd pinned to the noticeboard, a fresh copy in biro on squared paper. 'Miss Lamb would be pleased.'
'Miss Lamb would be appalled,' he said. 'She made me stand in the corridor for a week.' Then he told me about the summer after Year Eleven, when we cycled out to the reservoir with a shoebox of felt tips and a plan to chalk the helmet onto the dam wall. The rain came in off the moors before we'd finished the visor. The pink ran into the green, the grey slid down into the teal, and we sat on the wet concrete laughing until the church bell in the lane rang six. What was left looked like a sunset with a head in it.
At the end of the night he tore the sketch off the noticeboard and folded it into my coat pocket. 'Keep it,' he said. 'Next time we meet, I'll want it back, and you'll have to bring the chalk.' I still have it. The pink bloom has bled through to the back of the page, so every time I unfold it, the flowers are printed in reverse on the other side.
