Stormtrooper helmet on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The design shows a stormtrooper helmet rendered with smooth grey shading and highlights, with a bright pink visor band. Thin geometric lines and triangular shapes frame the helmet and extend across the skin, with some stippled dotwork in the lower section. The tightly cropped photo shows the forearm against a plain grey, softly blurred background.

Brother Anselm kept the bell tower at Saint Ruan's, and every winter the valley wind came up through the larch woods and tried the shutters. One January it brought a thing down the cart road that rolled like a dropped pail: a helmet of pale grey, smooth as a cooked egg, with a single band of rose-coloured glass where the eyes should be. The carter who found it would not touch it. He said it had been walking in the snow with no head inside, and that it had come to ask for shelter.

The abbot wanted it melted down for the bell metal. Anselm asked for one night. He sat with it by the candle, and tracing the lines scratched across its crown he saw they were not scratches but a map of some other place, a frame of triangles that met at a point below the chin. He measured them with a knotted cord the way his grandfather had measured fields, and the sums came out clean every time, which unsettled him more than any demon could have.

By dawn he had worked out that the pink band was the only part that held heat. Held near the hearth it warmed his palm; held near the cold dressed stone of the cloister it went faintly dark, like a coal dying. He set it on the sill of the bell tower facing the valley and went down to bed. In the morning the snow had stopped, the road was clear to the far village, and the helmet was gone.

Anselm never found it again, though the carter swore he saw a grey shape on the cart road south, shoulders squared, its frame of lines folded neatly against its back, walking as if it knew exactly where the sums were leading.
