Stormtrooper helmet with blue floral pattern
Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo
A Stormtrooper helmet is shown front on, with a grey metallic finish and bold black outlines. Blue floral motifs and swirling scrollwork decorate the top of the helmet, cheeks and mouth grille, in a style reminiscent of sugar skull artwork. The shading is smooth on the visor and helmet, and the colour is mainly blue and grey against plain skin.

The reunion was in the same Stockport sports hall where we had lost the county netball final, and the old trophies were still in their glass case. Someone had propped a helmet on the top shelf between them, grey as wet pavement, its crown blooming with blue flowers. Mrs Pryce, who still taught art and still wore her lanyard, tapped the glass and said, 'I know who did that,' and turned to look at me.

I had painted it, or rather Dev Sandhu and I had, one wet Thursday in the spring of Year Eleven, when the plaster cast came out of the drama store with a crack down one cheek. We nicked a tin of silver paint and a sheet of blue gouache from the cupboard. Dev wanted the eyes black. I wanted the swirls. We argued over the grille through a whole lunch break, and when the bell went we shoved the thing behind the kiln and forgot about it for twenty-five years.
Dev was in the corner with a paper cup of squash, his hair thinner and his laugh exactly the same. He had moved to Valencia and sold ceramics to tourist shops, and once he sent me a photo of a skull he had painted for a market stall. Same blue. Same petals curling out of the sockets. He never said where he got the idea, and I never asked.
'It was always going to end up in a museum,' Dev said, and he lifted the helmet down with both hands. He turned it so the crack faced the wall. 'I kept the grille blue,' he said, as if that settled something. He passed it to me, and it weighed almost nothing. We had painted it so carefully that we had forgotten it was only plastic.
