Watercolour Boba Fett on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the helmet and chest armour of Boba Fett, with the helmet's visor and dome drawn in black and grey shading. Loose, bleeding colour washes in pink, purple, blue, orange and green fill the armour, and splashes of paint and small star shapes surround the figure. The design fills the upper arm and extends onto the shoulder, with the face of the wearer not shown.

Dear Tom, The Harbour Players sent the helmet back to me on Tuesday, wrapped in a pillowcase that still smells of your gran's lavender. Someone had sat on it during the Christmas panto and the dome was caved in on the left like a bad bruise. I told them it was beyond saving. Then I opened the crate, saw the old gunmetal under the grime, and couldn't bring myself to take the sander to it.

So I went at it with what I had: a tin of cadmium red, two jars of ultramarine I'd been hoarding since the pier job, and the cheap violet your mum always said was for bruises. I let the colours bleed where the dent was, pink sliding into purple, a green wash over the visor like weather coming in off the estuary. I flicked white spatter across the top with an old toothbrush and drew little four-point stars with the tip of a hog-hair brush, the way I did on the backdrops when you were small and sat under the trestle table eating crisps.
Halfway through the blue drips down the chest plate I stopped to wipe my glasses and realised the dent had gone soft under the wash. The whole thing looked like it had come a long way through a bad storm and out the other side. Nobody will ever know it was hit. That's the trick with watercolour, you let the mess do the telling.
I'm posting it to you on Saturday, with the crate. Come and see it on the pier before the council takes the shelter down, and bring your scarf, it's bitter out there. Love, Auntie Dilys.
