Helmeted warrior woman with Greek key border
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A graphite pencil drawing on paper shows a woman in profile wearing an ornate, plumed helmet decorated with scrolling foliage. Below her, a band of Greek key pattern curls around a wave-like form that suggests a serpent or flowing ribbon. The shading is soft and layered, with fine hatching in the helmet and hair and darker tones along the edges of the design.

Shut the byre door properly, Tom, or the ewes will be wandering into the lane again, and then we'll have the whole parish out in the snow looking for them. There. Now sit by the range and I'll tell you about the helmet, since you've been eyeing it on the hook since Michaelmas.

It came off a ship that never made port. That's what my grandmother said, and she had it from the carter who brought the salt cod up from Hull. A woman rode in the prow with a bronze helmet on her head, great cheek-guards and a crest like a horse's mane dyed red, and she carried a shield with a border of little hooked squares, round and round, the way the river goes when it can't decide which field to flood. The sailors said she was the goddess of the owls, and the owls never argued.
Winter came early that year. The beck froze to the stones and the serpent of ice that curled under the bridge stopped singing. The woman climbed down at our gate and asked for nothing but a fire and the name of the nearest well. My great-grandfather gave her both. She sat by the hearth with her helmet in her lap and drew on the back of a feed sack with a stub of charcoal, a rope of waves and a border of keys. When she left in the morning the sack was gone, and the frost on the window had the same pattern.
So, the helmet. Mind the rust on the cheek-guard. It was never made for fighting; she only wanted someone to keep the shape of her in mind until spring. Now bank that fire, and don't go looking for her in the snow.
