A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, all of you, because the paste dries faster than a liar's promise. Ruhiya kept her stall where the river bends below the granary, and she sold her henna by the leaf and by the hour. Two patterns for a copper coin, and she would not sell a third to anyone who could not name the two they had already chosen.

One afternoon a young ferryman came with river mud on his sandals and asked for the swirling vine that starts at the wrist and curls off the fingers like smoke. Ruhiya turned his hand palm up in her lap and began with a single dot where the pulse beat. She painted for the length of a cooling jug. He did not speak. When she finished she pressed a damp cloth over the ink and told him to leave it until morning.

Morning showed the vine gone the colour of strong tea, curling exactly the way the river road bends below the granary. He came back squinting, then laughing, and asked for the flower with seven petals too. Ruhiya charged him only the one coin.

Here is the thing I tell the children: the paste does not carry the pattern, the hand does. Ruhiya had painted him a map of his own road, and the stain stayed for twelve days, long enough for him to stop watching the water and start looking ahead.
