Four arrow and infinity designs
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows four line drawings of arrows, each passing through an infinity-shaped loop or twisted ribbon with an arrowhead at one or both ends. The top left design has a larger loop decorated with small leaves, stars and dotted accents, while the top right design is simpler with an open loop. The two lower designs use smooth, twisted ribbon forms, and all four are drawn in black ink on a white background.

Tom, the lorry from Kendal finally came up the valley road this morning, so you can stop asking whether the pass is open. It is, but only just. The men at the hut say snow came down on Tuesday and filled the hairpins from the third bend to the top, and they have been digging the loops out by hand with shovels borrowed from the church.

I walked up to the sign yesterday with the post bag on my back. The old arrow board still points over the saddle, though someone has painted a second arrowhead on the reverse, pointing the other way, as if the road could be argued with. Where the switchbacks loop round on themselves, the verge is thick with gentians and a small blue star with a yellow eye that I have no name for. Mrs Calder says her grandmother called it star-stitch and would never pick it, because the frost comes back for whatever is picked before the pass is cleared.
Go carefully on the upper curve. Keep the ribbon of the road on your left until you see the cairn with the cracked brass plate, and do not trust the turn past it, which looks like a way through and is only a drop. I have left a flask of ginger in the top of the bag and the second pair of gloves, which you will refuse and then wear.
Write soon. The last carrier says the snow will hold until the thaw, and I want to know you are over before then.
