Henna-style foot design sheet with mandalas and feathers
Geometric · Mixed · Flash
A foot-shaped card printed with a set of small decorative designs, including a large mandala with pink petals at the centre, a feather, crossed arrows, stars, flowers and a vine running up the foot. The linework is fine and mostly solid gold and black, with pink and red used only in the central mandala. The sheet sits on a wooden slice beside pink lisianthus flowers and white dried flowers on green grass.

The mandala never sits straight on the card, Auntie Rukhsana used to say, because the paper pulls when the foil goes on warm. I have cut these foot sheets for eleven years and still I measure twice, the steel rule pressed against the pale outline while the kettle goes cold beside the guillotine. Nobody notices the margins. They notice whether the vine runs true up the outer edge.

The Dewsbury order came in on a Tuesday, scrawled on the back of a bus ticket. The cousin wanted the crossed arrows turned to point at the toes, and the star moved closer to the big circle, and she wanted the pink petals darker, like the lisianthus on her wedding table. I said yes to the petals and no to the star. A star belongs where the eye stops, and the eye stops in the middle of the mandala, not on the edge. She laughed down the phone and said I sounded like my aunt, which I took as the compliment she meant.
She came back to the shop a week later with the sheet folded into a sandwich bag. Someone had pressed a flower petal to the back, pale pink and thin as tissue. She said the feather had held its gold better than anything else, and that people kept asking who had drawn it. I told her Auntie had drawn the first one in a school exercise book in 1979, and I had only traced it, over and over, until the lines learned my hand.
After she left I pinned one of my own spare sheets above the bench, beside the rule and the box of offcuts. One feather on its vine is missing a leaflet, a slip I made the night before my first wedding order and never corrected. Every morning I see the gap and every morning I leave it, because the ones who wear these always seem to want a place where the pattern is allowed to be a little bit human.
