Metallic gold and black temporary tattoo sheets

Geometric · Colour · Flash

Several white sheets of metallic temporary tattoo designs are fanned out across a textured hessian background. The designs are bands and motifs of chevrons, diamonds, triangles, arrows, leaves and interlocking lines, drawn with clean, solid outlines. The foil finishes are mainly gold, with some silver and black, arranged in repeating patterns on each sheet.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gulls had given up on us by the fortieth day out of Liverpool, and the hold smelled of wet paper and lamp oil. Mr Pallister, the purser, kept the sample books in a tin trunk under his bunk, and it was my job to air them on deck whenever the weather allowed. Two hundred sheets of foil transfers had been packed for the ladies' stores in Valparaiso, each one a grid of gold chevrons, diamonds, small triangles and leaves outlined in black, the sort of thing a girl might press onto her wrist before a dance.

I peeled one from its backing to practise on and laid it along my forearm. It caught the afternoon sun like a coin fished out of a drain, and for a whole watch I felt like a man who owned something. Pallister caught me at it and said the sheets were not for the crew, and then, because he was a decent old stick, he let me keep the one I'd spoiled.

The squall came up off the Horn on the forty-third day. The sheets lifted from the crates and went over the rail in a fan, skating across the whitecaps, gold catching the lightning. Pallister swore, then stopped swearing and watched them go. Every arrow on those sheets pointed the same way, aft, toward the wake and the long road home, and I had the odd notion that they were making for England without us.

We reached Valparaiso with eleven sheets left. I stuck the spoiled one inside the lid of my sea chest, where the little gold arrows still point back the way the ship came.
