The watch had stopped at twenty to three, and Marjorie Gell had been trying to coax it back to life since the rain came in off the moors. She laid it face up on the oilcloth beside the kettle, under the lamp, and fitted the loupe to her eye the way her father had taught her before he went to sea and never came back to teach anything else.

Outside, the sky over the allotments had cleared. The chain lay in a loose silver coil across the table, and every link caught the lamplight as though it were holding a small, cold star. She had told the lad from the post office that the thing was a rubbish old watch, not worth the postage. He had looked at the blue-violet smudge of the case back, the sprinkle of white dots, and said nothing at all.

She found the fault at last: a hairspring no thicker than an eyelash, kinked where someone had once dropped it. She straightened it with a sliver of bone and held her breath so long her chest ached. The balance wheel shivered. Then it began, tick, tick, the way a room goes quiet again after everyone has stopped talking and someone finally speaks.

She wound it, set it by the wireless signal, and went to the window. Somewhere above the Pennines a meteor drew a bright line across the dark, and for once she did not wish on it. She simply listened to the ticking and let the hour be whatever it was.
