Sit closer, the wind up here has teeth. You see that gatehouse? Half its roof is sky now, but the portcullis still hangs on its chains, gold with rust where the sun catches it. In the days of Lady Maud Aldercombe, those chains were not iron at all. Her smith, a thin man called Piers Tallow, melted down her dead husband's gilt spurs and drew them into links so fine they bent like thread. Every link was rounded and closed by hand, and he would not let a boy near the forge in case the boy's breath spoiled the work.

The castle had six hexagonal towers with black slate caps, and Lady Maud swore she would see a chain hung from every one before the spring. Piers worked through the winter. Some nights he sat by the bellows and counted stars through the hole in the great hall roof, marking them on scraps of tallow paper, because he believed a lock was only as true as the sky it was set beneath. Above the forge door he nailed an eight-pointed star cut from silver wire, so the stars would know where to find him.

In April the chains were done. The lady came down to the yard in her green cloak and ran a finger along the last link of the gate chain, and it hummed like a plucked string. Then she noticed the lock. Piers had forged the mechanism to open facing the hill road, not the courtyard, and it turned with a single breath of pressure. He had left the gate unbarred for the first time in the castle's history.

He was gone by dusk, and so was the silver star from the forge door. The lady never hung the sixth chain. The gate has stood open ever since, and the rust you see is only the metal keeping its promise to let anyone pass.
