A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Marguerite, you will laugh at me, but the lost property tin at Carrowmere Junction has finally given up its best find since the umbrella with the bone handle. On Tuesday somebody left a sheet of gold and black transfers on the 4.10 bench, and Mr Pryce from the signal box brought it to me still sealed in its cellophane. Nobody has come asking for it. The sheet is about the size of a timetable, with a pair of wings spread across the top like something off a church roof, feathers curling in the corners and two snakes wriggling down the side as if they had been swimming in ink.

I spent my dinner break pressing the pieces onto the back of my hand. There is an eye of Horus with a teardrop curl, a six-pointed star, a sun with a black heart, and triangles that point nowhere in particular. Under the lamp they caught the light like the gilt on the clock face at Platform Two. Along the bottom runs a row of black spikes, which Pryce says look like the teeth of a comb for giants.

The trains kept coming through the wet. The 5.42 to Leeds rattled the window glass, and I kept picturing whoever had peeled these off in a hurry, meaning to put them back on at the next stop. Perhaps they had wanted to look like someone who was going somewhere important. I wrote the reference on a label, put the sheet in the box marked for the Friday auction, then took it out again.

I am writing because I have decided to keep the feathers. The wings would look ridiculous on a man of my age, and the snakes are too long for anything I own. Send me your address and I will post you the sun, since you always wanted something that looked like it could stop a train. The rest I will leave in the tin for the next person to find.
