The pattern had to be drawn from the centre outwards, my aunt said, or the flower would wander off the page like a drunk man hunting for his front door. So I started with the dot. One spot of ink pressed down with the back of a steel nib, then a ring of seven around it, each the same distance from the next, because she would check every one with a ruler and a narrowed eye.

We worked at her kitchen table through the winter the power kept cutting out, when the lamp ran on paraffin and the whole room smelled faintly of pennies. Her hands had stiffened by then, so she dictated and I drew. Paisley first, the teardrop curling over on itself like a wave that had thought better of breaking. Then the leaves, scalloped at the edges, then the round petals stacked three deep, each one tucked under the next.

The swirls were the hard part. Every curl had to turn the same way on both sides, mirror-true, and I kept getting them wrong, the left spiral tightening while the right one lazed open. She didn't scold. She took the nib from my fingers, drew one spiral perfectly in four breaths, and handed it back. Now do the other side without looking at the first.

I finished as the light went. When I held the sheet up to the lamp, the brown lines had softened at their edges and the whole flower seemed to be opening towards the window. She touched one dot with her thumb and said it would do. I still have that sheet, folded into quarters in the drawer with the cotton reels.
