Symmetrical floral ornament line drawing
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a vertical, mirror-symmetrical ornament built from a central stem with fan-shaped leaves, two large rosette flowers, curling scrolls and rows of small circles and dots. The linework is a single even black line with no shading, and the open, outlined petals suggest a traditional decorative motif. The design sits centred on a plain cream background with generous margins.

Mr Adeyemi had the tracing paper pinned flat with four tacks, one at each corner, the way you'd pin a sheet over a sleeping dog. "Don't breathe on it," he said. Ruth breathed anyway, and the paper lifted at one edge as if it had been waiting for her.

The drawing was a plaster rose from the old Lyceum bar, copied from a pattern book printed in Leeds in 1891. Two rosettes sat either side of a stem, a fan of leaves rose above them, curls ended in nothing, and a row of little circles marched up the top like a choir that had forgotten its hymn. Mr Adeyemi said the draughtsman had never once lifted his pen, and that every line was the same weight because he was too proud to change his mind.
They worked through the afternoon with the radio on low. By five she had transferred everything except one dot on the left-hand scroll, which had gone soft under a smear of old gum. She held the paper to the window and counted the matching scroll on the right. Eight dots. Then she counted the left again and found seven.
"Leave the gap," Mr Adeyemi said from the door, not turning round. "He left one too. Every copy has one. Otherwise the thing thinks it's finished." Ruth drew the rosettes and the fan of leaves, then stopped with the pencil hovering over the empty place. She didn't fill it. The rose went up on the wall with its one missing circle, and the whole room seemed to lean a little towards it.
