Hibiscus flowers and a figure on the thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The design shows three large hibiscus-style flowers joined by thin curling stems and leaves, with a female face in profile sitting among the blooms. The linework is soft and sketchy, with grey shading to give the petals and face some depth. The tattoo is in black and grey only and runs down the outer thigh in a diagonal composition.

Marisol came in through the back door at ten to four, shaking rain off a headscarf printed with red flowers, and told me the hibiscus on her sill had opened in the night, all five petals at once, which it had never done in March. I didn't look up from the proving trays. At that hour the ovens are the only thing in Greaves Street that is sure of itself, and I was not going to be argued out of my ginger buns by a flower.

She had been coming in since the autumn, when her sister's flat above the launderette was emptied and the landlord gave her a box of things that weren't worth the van. Pilar had drawn in soft pencil. Marisol kept the sketchbook in her coat, and she would unfold it on the counter between the crumpet rings and the jug of milk, turning the pages with a floury thumb. Most were blooms. Stems looped and doubled back on themselves. Here and there a face sat among the petals, half hidden, as if it had been asked to wait its turn.
On the last page there was one more face, tipped sideways and drawn so lightly that the paper had almost forgotten it. Marisol didn't say anything. She just pushed the book towards me and went to fetch the cups.
At half six I slid the first tray of loaves onto the rack. The light came up grey over the bins, and I pressed a fingertip into each crust before it cooled, leaving a small dent the shape of a petal. Marisol took the last cup of tea outside and stood on the step with it, watching the sky lighten over the roofs, and when the bell above the door rang for the first customer she was still there, turning the cup slowly in her hands.
