Home is where the heart is lettering on calf

Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a lower leg showing the phrase Home is where the heart is written in cursive lettering inside a hand-drawn outline of a state. A small heart sits on the left edge of the outline. The linework is clean and even, in black ink only, and the lettering fills the centre of the frame against a plain skin background.

Dear Tom, your envelope came on Tuesday with the stamp upside down, which Mrs Pardoe says means the postman was fond of you, and I have pinned your map above the range where the steam can't reach it. I know it isn't really a map. You drew that square on the back of a feed receipt with the biro that won't write in the cold, and you said it was the shape of the place where the fields go on past where a person can see. I've looked at it every morning since with my tea going cold. The lines are clean. You always did have a steady hand for things that didn't matter.

Your father would have laughed at the words you wrote across the middle. Home is where the heart is, in your loopy hand, as if somebody had said it to you in a dream. I told Mrs Pardoe you'd gone soft. She said you'd gone to a country that makes people say things like that, and I suppose that's true, since out there they seem to think a state line is reason enough for sentiment.

Then you asked me to put a heart on the map, and I did, on the left edge where the coast would be, because I didn't know which way you'd be facing when you came home. I'm not going to say when that will be. The kettle's on, the lane is muddy and the hens have started again. Come when the wheat's cut, or don't, but send another square of paper so I know which way the edge runs.

Love, Mum
