Cabin and red sun on a calf
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A cabin with a lit window sits on a hillside under a large red sun with birds in flight, all enclosed in a rope-edged banner that reads HOME IS WHERE and YOU ARE. Bold black outlines, flat fills and radiating line work frame the scene, with pink flowers and green foliage along the lower edges. The central colour piece is flanked by black and grey versions of the same design.

Ruth Calloway ran out of gold leaf the same week the Pelham boarding house sent back the first sign, saying the lettering looked like it had been shouted. She sat on the tailgate with a cup of coffee gone cold and studied the board against the hill behind the depot. It needed a sun, the widow had said, a big one, and birds, because her husband had liked birds. He had been dead eleven years, and nobody in Carrow Creek had asked her to explain why the sign mattered so much.

She borrowed a ladder from Dewey at the hardware and climbed to the ridge where her own cabin stood, its shingles still dark from the spring rain. Her son Tom had taken the bus to Ohio in June, promising a letter every Sunday. None had come. She painted the banner first, a rope border in twisted strokes, and the words in the plain capitals she had copied from a sign alphabet book. HOME IS WHERE. Then the sun, red as the tin she had bought for the barn door, and the birds lifting off the roofline like flicked ink.
At dusk she lit the lamp in the front window, the one that faced the road, and carried the board down to the boarding house. Dewey asked why she had painted her own place on a stranger's sign. She said it wasn't her place, not really, just a house anyone might be let into. When she drove home past the boarding house gate, she looked back and saw the sign hung in the porch light, and below it, the small yellow window she had painted on the cabin, the same one she had left burning for Tom every night since June.
