Close-up of the word hope in thin, lilac-toned script tattooed along a finger, a fine line lettering piece on the hand.

Hope lettering on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo

The image shows the word hope written in a delicate, flowing cursive script along the length of one finger. The linework is thin and even, and the ink appears pale lilac against the skin, with some softening that suggests an older or lightly faded piece. The composition is a close, slightly angled shot against a car dashboard, with a silver ring on the adjacent finger.

The lift in Harrow Court had been broken since Easter, so Dee took the stairs with the shopping bags looped over her wrists and counted the landings out loud to keep herself honest. Nine floors. Her brother had written the word on her finger in biro the night before the court date, pressing so hard the nib spat, and she had told him it looked like a child's handwriting. He said that was the point. It was the same loopy H he used on birthday cards and sticky notes stuck to the fridge.

By the seventh landing the ink had smudged into a blue-grey ghost along her knuckle. She stopped to catch her breath and held the hand up to the grimy window, where the light came through the cracked glass and made the letters look almost lilac, almost like something that had always been there. Down in the car park, the ginger tabby that lived under the bins was stalking a crisp packet. Somebody's radio was playing a song from before either of them was born.

When she reached the door, Dee didn't use her key. She knocked with the side of her fist, the hand with the word on it, and waited. Through the letterbox she could hear the telly and the scrape of a chair. Then the door opened and her brother stood there in his socks, looking older than she remembered, and he saw her finger before he saw her face. He reached out and took the bags off her wrists, one at a time, the way you would with something that might spill.
